My 2 Cent on GST

GSTMANY people are worried and confused regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST) due to various reasons such as misinformation, lack of understanding and speculation. However, the Government has been taking steps to rectify this and there is still plenty of time since GST will only be implemented in April 2015. One of the main concerns is that the GST will raise prices of all goods and services but this is not quite true as consumers are already paying the Sales and Service Tax (SST).

The GST will replace the SST, not overlap it, and in some cases, this will cause prices to fall.
This is because flaws in the SST often cause issues such as taxes levied on top of taxes or companies including tax in their price but not passing them on to the Government.
Basically, the SST is a high tax on few products with many loopholes while the GST is a lower tax more products and promotes transparency. Due to provisions in the GST, thrifty consumers will actually pay less tax than they do now and those who are spendthrift may not even notice the negligible increase in the prices they pay.
Additionally, to ensure that sellers do not attempt to take advantage of the unaware by raising prices, the Government will step-up enforcement of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and harsher punishments have been promised to those who contravene it. The GST also makes provisions which will lower taxes on exports, which should attract foreign investors to produce their goods here and sell them overseas.
For those concerned that the GST will cause inflation, it should be noted that previously, Fitch Ratings predicted that Malaysia’s credit rating might be downgraded in their June forecast.
According to economists, this would have caused inflation as the Ringgit would be devalued and in turn, cause imports to be more expensive.
The GST is part of a multi-step plan, which includes lowering subsidies which benefit those who don’t need them, to counter these concerns.
Hopefully, this brief and simplistic explanation of the GST will help clarify matters but for those interested in finding out more, details from official sources are already available with more coming out every day.

Moving Forward

My fellow Barisan Nasional Youth Volunteers,

BNYV is a formidable force. On the ground especially at state level our volunteers continue to organize and make a difference whether making sure affordable housing policies are being implemented(Hello YB!), giving medical checkups to the public(BNYV Medic Team), rejuvenating disaster area(Ops Banjir) or simply bridging key leaders with constituents. Many of our volunteers have been recognized as the next generation leaders whether at public policy platforms or even in political parties. In the previous general election we have also mobilized our volunteers to assist Barisan Nasional in one of its most competitive and challenging election to date.

BNYV was launched back in 2012 and at the height of our formation, we had over 10,000 registered members.

I remember when we began, the amount of hope and enthusiasm for this platform where youths(including yours truly) can volunteer time and effort to a cause that we and family believe. All this without having to dealing with the politics of the divisions or the component parties.

I remember being in the hall for our first formal gathering in PWTC and thinking to myself, “Oh God yes!I am not alone. There are other Barisan Nasional supporters.”

Having said that, let us not forget that BNYV was setup with three core aims in mind:

  1. To provide a platform for youths to get first-hand experience in the workings of an election campaign and to understand the democratic process in our country better.
  2. To provide a platform for youths to volunteer and give back to society.
  3. And most importantly, to specifically target non-partisan BN supporters (particularly urban based) to get involved and be a voice in the political landscape. and be a voice within that landscape.

Moving forward, the focus of BNYV for 2015 is to center our events on projects and developments of the BN Government that have a substantial impact to the Rakyat. We will be seeking to demonstrate the value of the policies and projects of the BN Government to convince the public that BN is the right coalition to govern this country. Project developments like the River of Life Project, the Iskandar Region development projects and others will be focal point of our efforts.

Come next month, we will be conducting a series of volunteer induction courses to increase our manpower resources to cater to the new programmes which will be launched throughout the year. I hope you will join us as we seek to transform BNYV to become BNYV 2.0.

In line with the new revitalised focus, I am also pleased to announce that we have re-launched our website which you can visit here at www.bnyv.my. Our Twitter and FB page remains active and please do expect to see more content up there in the coming months. For those that have yet to register as a volunteer at the website you can do so at www.bnyv.my/registration to ensure that you get the latest update from us here at BNYV.

Also, for those of you who are unaware we have moved our office from Bangsar to Desa Sri Hartamas. We expect that the office will be operational next month. We do not deny that Bangsar has its sentimental values but circumstances require us to be pragmatic. We remain focus in achieving our targets.

Enough about our internal update.

Let’s be frank.

Times are changing. The electoral landscape is no longer what it once was. In the old days, people used to say that you can put a monkey as a candidate and it will win provided it’s a BN candidate. The same cannot be said today.

If anything, Barisan Nasional is in a worst position today then when BNYV was formed in 2012. The BN Election Machinery is a well oiled machine backed with individuals who have tirelessly dedicated their time and effort to the cause.

But it is old.

The machinery is in fact very much personality driven and it is stacked with the same faces who are still struggling to catch up with the era of social media. We need new blood. Preferably ones who aren’t there to just make a contract deal. We need you to get involved. We need to help and complement the machinery beast.

In truth, I write this email because I still believe in Barisan Nasional. I believe that its ideals and policies for the Rakyat remain true. I believe that it is still the best choice to govern this country.

I also believe that BNYV is the game changer for the betterment of BN. We are not here to kiss ass but to be the change that BN ought to have. We will not tolerate policies that will not be beneficial to the people especially the next generation of Malaysia. Capitalism should never at the expense of the Rakyat. For as long as we remain true to the fight for the people and not the self vested interest of individuals, we shall prevail. No matter where you are. Whether at the office, in lecture halls or simply sitting on your couch now, get involve. Make that difference in the ways that you can. The time is now.

The scenario and situation may be different, but the ideals of BN remain the same. We fight for the people. We are here with you. You are not alone.

Yours,

Akmal Saufi Mohamed Khaled
Director, BNYV

Kes Liwat II Anwar Ibrahim: Adakah sudah menemui nokhtahnya?

anwar ibrahim

Isunya, Bolehkah DSAI Merayu?

Tukar Pemerintah, DSAI bebas?

Director’s Sound Bite: What we need

In the end Malaysia’s future is our future. There is a set of values that makes us Malaysians, the challenges that we meet together as a nation. Not only as an individual. But individualism has been made as a compass for development resulting cluttered actions and objectives.

We need a working consensus tackling big problems and not get distracted by the petty and trivial.

Faith functions as a place for peace, understanding and comfort and yet some exploits them and drives us apart.

Responsible pledges must be made. Transparency must be ushered while nation’s security to well protected. A duty must be well executed. Accountability to be checked.

We need to accommodate from intention to action. We want people able to contribute to this nation. We want to create the tools to do so. Volunteering itself is good. Having fun is great. But again with the scarcity of the sources that we have, we want the biggest impact with the minimum amount of sources used. How do we do so? Only by working together impossible becomes probable.

We cannot afford to waste any action anymore.

Walk Against Corruption 2014

On Saturday 13th December 2014, our Director Akmal Saufi Mohamed Khaled was given the chance to address over 700 Malaysians that participated in Transparency International-Malaysia’s (TI-M) Walk Against Corruption at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, organised in collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), NKRA Against Corruption, Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The large turnout supported the Walk’s theme “A Nation Free of Corruption Starts with You”, as families and individuals participated in the 1.4km Walk, symbolising their commitment to end corruption. Organised for the third year running, the Walk’s aim was to demonstrate public support in fighting corruption across all strata of society as well as to raise awareness, particularly to the youth, on the issue.

Another key theme of the day was “collaboration”, particularly between civil society and government bodies, coming together for the same objective – to show solidarity against corruption.

The Coalition for Governance, Integrity, Accountability and Transparency (GIAT) was officially launched at the Walk by TI-M President, Dato’ Akhbar, with a mission to “promote and advocate for governance, integrity, accountability in Malaysia” by upholding five core principles: impartiality, justice, openness, solidarity, honesty. Dato Akhbar stated “”We are going to work together and form a stronger voice so that it will be heard, and all of us understand that it is important to come up with ways to curb corruption in our country.” The Coalition includes the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), Sinar Project, Citizens Network for a Better Malaysia (CNBM), the Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) and Friends of Kota Damansara.

The number of youth at this year’s Walk was inspiring. Around 140 university students from the Corruption Prevention Secretariats participated from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) and International Languages Teacher Training Institute (IPBA). UIAM students also performed a dance sequence and a sketch highlighting the destructive effects of corruption on people’s lives. Around 50 enthusiastic representatives from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy (MACA) also attended the Walk, contributing to the numbers of youth participants.

The Walk also received great support from the following sponsors: Nestlé, Celebrity Fitness, Perskindol and Saucony, who contributed free product samples and lucky draw gifts.

This year’s Walk Against Corruption represents a significant milestone in the solidarity shown between people of all backgrounds, ages, ideals and beliefs from different sectors coming together for the same cause. TI-M is extremely thankful to everyone who participated in strengthening this common platform, by helping to emphasize that this is the only way to move forward in the fight against corruption

Piala AFF: Harimau harus menang selesa atasi Vietnam – Khairy

BERITA HARIAN

12 March 2014 – A response to Bloom Businessweek’s article

Press Statement
A response to Bloomberg Businessweek’s article dated 12 March 2014
12 March 2014

As Malaysians, we must express our disappointment by the appalling article of Mr Joshua Kurlantzick published in Bloomberg Businessweek dated 12 March 2014 entitled “Why Malaysia Will Say Almost Nothing About The Missing Plane”.

As if having a personal vendetta towards the Malaysian Government and Malaysia Airlines, he accused that the Malaysia has been harbouring terrorists in the nation without stating prove in his article. He further accused that the Malaysian Government is keeping mum of the whole scenario. Mr Kurlantzick also seems to portray that having a relation with Muslim majority country is a problem.

At a time where around the world everyone continue to hope, giving support and providing encouraging words to Malaysia, this one particular writer seems to not have a single empathy to the affected family members of flight MH370 as well as to those who are involved in the Search and Rescue(SAR) mission of flight MH370.

We Malaysians believe that it would be Mr Kurlantzick rights to state whatever he wants to say in line with his much cherished rights to freedom of speech.

However, in being so well versed and knowledgeable Mr. Kurlantzick should have at least have the decency to respect a nation that has just been struck with a calamity. At least some of the  other western media have the decency to do so.

Sooner or later the story would unfold with further details that can enlighten the family and the public. But this is not a game of who can release information faster. It is more than that. This is a situation that every single information received or theory conjured should be verified so as to not cause further distress to the affected ones. We Malaysians do not want an abundance of information that god knows where it came from. Unlike Mr. Kurlantzick, it is the Malaysian Government and Malaysian Airlines that will be together with the families. It would be the Malaysian Government and Malaysian Airlines that will receive legal repercussions if the information are not verified and disclosed.

We are of the view that rather than causing further sadness, discomfort and confusion to the family members of flight MH370, Mr Kurlantzick with all due respect we Malaysians love our country and we would not just let anyone attack us in such a manner. Especially in a situation of such gravity. So back off.
